What is bbPress? If you are experienced WordPress user then you most likely know what bbPress is. For newbie, as bbPress developers’ state: “bbPress shares developers and architecture with the well-known WordPress blogging software and the genesis of the project was in WordPress’ support forums which are a good example of a full implementation of bbPress. bbPress is focused on web standards, ease of use, ease of integration, and speed”. So It’s designed to be small and efficient and with built-in tagging support.
And what bbPress is not: “Most software in this space is focused on features like avatars or file attachment and if that’s what you’re interested in, bbPress probably isn’t for you. We’re focused on keeping things as small and light as possible for the explicit purpose of creating a community around support.”
I think you do not need special license from developers to run this forum for purpose other than Support issues. There wasn’t any real need for forum on my site. My three slideshow modules are nothing compared to WordPress like software and any feedback through comments is more than enough.
There was something other than just need. I loved elegancy and simplicity of WordPress from first sight and bbPress forum is of that kind and close to WordPress in architecture as well. Plus hot tags feature. So it’s a kind of fun and educational workings with future in mind.
bbPress is in continuous and endless ALPHA state with no light at the end of the tunnel. This means you have to have some experience in web installations and php, though installing it is not difficult. But.., after you install it you discover that CSS file is missing (they do not provide it with package) and you have to integrate your bbPress installation with your site theme from the scratch.
The problem here is that googling will not help. Just a few sites out there are running bbPress and no themes or CSS downloads to start with. So just copy your CSS file into bbPress forum template folder and adjust it by classes used in bbPress template files. Collecting all bbPress classes into one CSS file can be boring and time consuming task. So, to make things simple you can look at CSS file used in WordPress support page.
Mysteriously, in my installation bbPress couldn’t read CSS file in template folder (after I put it there) and I just placed a copy of it in root of bbPress installation. This worked. Later I discovered that .htaccess file in bb-templates folder with “Deny For All” rule inside caused this. That is Alpha release.
As in WordPress bb template files (or theme files) are divided into blocks: header.php, footer.php, post.php etc.. If you want complete site theme integration, then you should go through each of these files and wrap bbPress loops and constructions in your theme divs and markup.
Integration of this kind is just “site theme” integration - not WordPress integration. bbPress at current state is standalone application. And BTW, I think it is better to keep your eggs in different baskets - site users and publishers in one basket and users who come for support or discuss in another..
What you get after you installed and integrated bbPress into your site? Well, with some css tuning you may get almost exact look of WordPress Support Forum. You can look at this site’s bbPress installation. It is not linked from the front page.

The problem that I am finding is that this is the exact url that my site is going to when I try to login (1st attempt):
http://bbpress.example.com/support/bb-login.php
Clearly my url is not example.com, but I can’t find where in the files I should change that. I’ve setup the database, modified the config file, but the instructions don’t mention this and as I am not a PHP person I do not know what this means. Ugh.

there is such file, in the root of bbPress installation - bb-config.php - there you should manually specify domain and intallation path. If this file doesnt exist, then find bb-config-example.php and rename it to bb-config.php and then put appropriate data there. This file is well commented and you will do it easily.
